Into the Forest: Beginning Fused Glass Sgraffito Drawing

"Into the Forest" is a nature-themed course that will teach you to use colored glass powders to create two dimensional imagery in glass. We will explore traditional ideas of drawing and using a very non-traditional approach; using glass to interpret line, value, contrast, texture, color, movement, and gesture. Special attention will be given to drawing trees, foliage, water, rocks, and other natural subjects.

Suitable for beginning through advanced students, previous drawing experience is not necessary, but an open mind and some fusing experience is helpful. By the time you leave you will have gained a new awareness of the visual language that is possible with kiln formed glass, as well as confidence in your ability to "see" as an artist.

In class you will create and complete a large 8 1/2"x 11" panel and two 5x7" pieces, along with several small samples.  Additional topics to be covered: Kiln formed cane and murrini making, collage part sheets for sgraffito drawing, tool making, color theory, reactive glass, volume control, firing schedules, and finishing.
