I create imagery with finely powdered black glass on a sheet glass substrate. Sgraffito is a subtractive technique; light areas are created by scraping away the powdered glass, while dark areas are made by adding deeper piles of powder.
The glass powders are manipulated with card stock, my fingers, sharpened erasers, and other found objects. The powder drawing is very vulnerable until the piece is fired in a kiln, which melts the powder into the sheet glass substrate. The finished piece is 100% glass and the drawing is permanent.
